Ingredients

For the French Toast

  • 4 slices thick slices of bread Brioche or Texas Toast preferred, avoid white sandwich bread.
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree Use canned pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling.
  • 3 large eggs Large eggs are standard for this recipe.
  • 3/4 cup milk Whole milk is recommended.
  • 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon For flavor; adjust to preference.
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg A warm spice to complement pumpkin.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves For enhanced flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Adds a caramel flavor; can be replaced with honey for a healthier option.
  • a splash vanilla extract For added warmth and flavor.
  • as needed Butter or oil For cooking on the skillet.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla until well combined.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter or oil to prevent sticking.
  • Dip each slice of bread quickly into the batter, ensuring it's coated but not soggy.
  • Cook each bread slice in the skillet for about 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  • Keep the cooked slices warm on a plate in the oven set to low while you finish the rest.

Notes

For less mess, use a shallow dish for dipping the bread. If using gluten-free bread, the flavor remains delightful but the texture may vary. Feel free to experiment with toppings like chocolate chips or whipped cream.
